Luna Innovations’ Materials Systems Group is seeking a Materials Research Scientist in our Charlottesville, Virginia location.  This position will support a number of programs involving electronic and electromagnetic coatings, adhesives, and materials.  The position will be responsible for applications development and materials characterization with an emphasis on electronic and magnetic properties of materials.  The Materials Research Scientist will investigate new materials to improve performance, suggest potential solutions, and provide input for new areas of research. 

 

Responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Lead the development of new materials with specific electromagnetic properties for conductive, low observable, and communications applications.
  • Work closely with other members of the materials and business development teams to identify and pursue potential applications and opportunities.
  • Assist or lead in the development and implementation of commercialization strategies to transition technology to products.
  • Provide technical expertise for related activities within Luna.

 

Required:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Polymer Science, or related discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience after doctorate, including program management experience.
  • Recent experience conducting and/or directing research in the areas of coatings, adhesives, sealants, and/or polymeric nano-composites
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Technical or proposal writing experience.
  • Relocation to Charlottesville, VA.
  • Ability to travel (less than 15%).

 

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, function well in a dynamic cross-disciplinary environment, and be able to think independently to solve problems.  The candidate must have the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical personnel both internally and externally.

 

Desired:

  • Specific experience developing materials into actual products is a plus.
  • Supervisory experience
  • Security clearance
