"The FIRST competitions are a great way to introduce and excite the next generation into the world of technology," said Murphy. "Nationally, there is a growing demand for engineers; however the number of engineers graduating from American colleges is decreasing. Luna, as with other technology companies, struggles to fill jobs in science and engineering, so we need to be furthering the effort to foster interest in these fields. If the United States wants to remain a leader in technological innovation, we need to find ways to encourage our youth to explore career opportunities in these technological fields."
As a member of the Virginia chapter's EAB, Murphy will be responsible for reviewing the programmatic mission of VirginiaFIRST; be an advocate for VirginiaFIRST and FIRST programs with community, statewide and political leaders; and provide advice and counsel on funding sources and allocations, committing to secure support so that VirginiaFIRST meets its operating budget.
Luna Innovations is a Silver Sponsor of the Virginia-DC FIRST LEGO® League (FLL) robotics program, in which teams of middle-school-aged students assemble and compete with their robots (based on the LEGO technology) designed to accomplish tasks involved in a "real world" scenario. In 2007, Virginia-DC FLL experienced a 30 percent growth with 600 children from 78 teams participating in the state championship hosted at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.
