Environmental Markets at Luna Innovations

Luna Innovations is developing innovative technologies for remedying global problems that threaten public health and the integrity of our natural environment.
Research is focused primarily in the following four research areas:
- Human and environmental impacts of nanomaterials
- Development of safe practices for nanomanufacturing
- Innovative uses of nanotechnology in environmental health applications
- Food security and detection of chemical and biological threat agents
Research projects and product development efforts representative of the above research areas include:
Nanomechanical Cantilever Arrays and Hybrid Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) Sensors
Developing miniaturized, vastly multiplexed cantilever array sensors differentially functionalized for real-time measurement of chemical and biological contaminants in air and water. Applications currently under investigation range in scope from measuring toxic vapors in enclosed environments to measuring chemical contaminants in potable and surface waters.
Nanoscale Particles for Environmental Remediation and Decontamination
Developing low-cost, stabilized suspensions of catalytic nanoparticles for remediating contaminated groundwater and decontaminating surfaces and other media. Applications currently are focused on reductive dechlorination of chlorinated organics such as trichloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride present in groundwater.
NanoSAFE Initiative
Leveraging our extensive expertise with nanomanufacturing and commercial application of nanotechnology to develop assays, environmental and industrial safety protocols, engineering controls for nanoparticle exposures, and next-generation technologies for ensuring the safety of nanotechnology.
