On May 4, 2006, the Senate Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Trade, Tourism, and Economic Development held a hearing titled, "Promoting Economic Development Opportunities through Nano Commercialization." The hearing reviewed current nanotechnology-based economic development efforts resulting in more jobs, bettering paying jobs and higher quality products.
Jerry Gwaltney, City Manager of Danville, Virginia, provided testimony on how nanotechnology is helping his community. Over the past two years, his city has had tremendous losses in basic employer jobs causing the unemployment rate to more than double the state average. Danville is making a change. “We have shaped our environment into one that is user ready for various technology-focused companies, including nanotechnology,” he said. “It is no doubt that Luna nanoWorks has been a catalyst for other companies selecting our area.”
