Dr. Kent Murphy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Luna Innovations Incorporated, received an Emerging Entrepreneur Award from the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce on Nov. 9, 2006. This award was presented to Murphy for having the vision to see region’s potential for developing a modern nanomanufacturing facility in a historic tobacco warehouse, and for his overall commitment to Danville’s business community.
“We are honored to be acknowledged with this award,” Murphy said. “The entire team has worked hard to build a world-class nanomanufacturing facility which was located in Southside because of the vision and strong work ethic of the community, and the talent available. We congratulate the Southside region on all of the exciting changes taking place in our communities. We are thrilled to be a part of it.”
Luna has recruited an esteemed group of researchers and business founders to work for its nanoWorks division, including a world-renowned researcher in fullerenes, a former College of William and Mary professor known for his work in carbon nanosheets, and a former founder of two drug delivery companies now traded on the NASDAQ. Additionally, Luna is working with Danville Community College to develop a nanotechnology training curriculum within the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program.
Murphy will also be recognized with a plaque displayed on the Dan River Business Development Center’s “Entrepreneurial Wall of Fame.” The Entrepreneurial Awards were established by the Chamber in 2003 to recognize entrepreneurs who meet the challenge of fulfilling their vision to establish a business in the Danville/Pittsylvania County region.
