Luna Teams with GE Aviation to Monitor Corrosion of Rotorcraft Structures

ROANOKE, VA, Dec. 12, 2008 - Luna Innovations Incorporated is a subcontractor to GE Aviation on a US Army, Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) program to develop an integrated corrosion health monitoring system (I-CHMS).  Within this program the team will integrate corrosion sensing technologies with GE Aviation health and usage monitoring systems (HUMS). The total GE Aviation program contract value is $2 million, and will cover a two-year span of rotorcraft corrosion research and monitoring.

GE Aviation selected Luna for this project due to existing expert knowledge of aircraft corrosion and materials, and concurrent development efforts in corrosion monitoring, modeling, and prediction. For this contract, Luna will establish sensing strategies and monitoring methods while supporting development of diagnostic and prognostic algorithms. “The ultimate goals of this Army program are to improve rotorcraft safety, decrease maintenance costs, and increase rotorcraft readiness,” stated Dr. Fritz Friedersdorf, Director of Luna’s Intelligent Systems Group and subcontract Project Manager. “Through our knowledge of corrosion processes and sensing methods, we hope to establish a reliable corrosion management system that can be integrated with HUMS to support comprehensive condition based maintenance initiatives of the US Army.”

Work on this program is being performed by GE facilities in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Southampton, UK and by Luna’s Charlottesville, Virginia location.
