Engineering Services at Luna Innovations


Luna Innovations offers a range of engineering services from consulting on solutions for difficult test and measurement problems to "turnkey" system solutions for specific applications. Luna Innovations is a small business and is on the GSA schedule 871 for professional engineering.


Nondestructive Evaluation Services at Luna


Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) or nondestructive testing (NDT) is a quality assurance management tool for detecting and evaluating flaws without disruption or impairment of serviceability. Materials, products and equipment that fail to achieve their design requirements or projected life due to undetected defects may require expensive repair or early replacement. The flaws can lead to loss of strength or breakdown in service, which can lead to unsafe conditions or total failure. Aircraft, automobiles, pipelines, bridges, power stations and more are all inspected using non-destructive technologies. NDT and NDE are important technologies in guaranteeing safety, reliability and quality control.


Specializing in ultrasonic techniques, Luna Innovations' Hampton office (Luna Hampton) develops advanced diagnostic measurement and methods that enable the performance of difficult structural evaluations. Ultrasonic testing (UT) is a form of NDT that can measure physical properties quickly and reliably, finding hidden internal flaws without cutting or sectioning a part. UT uses sound waves having frequencies above the upper limit of the normal range of human hearing, which is about 20 kilohertz.


Ultrasonic immersion C-scan is ultrasonic imaging through water. Luna’s tank handles parts as large as 5’x6’ and 2000 pounds. Resolution up to parts per million is achievable. Luna Hampton also has extensive, in-house design and fabrication capabilities to meet unique inspection requirements.


Ultrasonic assessments have diverse applications, such as detecting hidden corrosion damage in lightweight aircraft structures, finding fatigue cracks in railroad rail, mapping damage inside artillery barrels, or locating faulty adhesive bonds inside solid rocket motors.
