In Luna's nanoWorks Division, located in Danville, VA, focus is on the development and manufacturing of proprietary technologies based on carbon nanomaterials. Luna is building a portfolio of nanomedicines aimed at disease targeting and diagnostic imaging, such as a new contrast agent to safely enhance the quality of images obtained from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Luna's therapeutic program is identifying and developing products based on the anti-inflammatory properties of its unique carbon nanospheres. Luna's TRIMETASPHERE® carbon nanomaterial is also the basis in the development of renewable energy solutions through efficient organic solar cells. Organic solar cells are a low-cost, lightweight, potential alternative to the silicon-based solar panels in wide use today. Improvements in performance are required before organic solar cells will be a commercial success and Luna has made significant progress in this technology area.

Luna's Technology Development Division supports our product development. Engineers and scientists located throughout Luna collaborate with a network of experts to identify technologies and develop ideas with market potential. Our technology development is focused in four areas: sensors and systems; health sciences; materials and secure computing & communications.

Our History

Luna was founded in 1990 and has been successful in taking innovative technologies from the applied research stage to product development. Luna has developed more than a dozen products serving various industries including energy, telecommunications, life sciences and defense. Following are three examples of independent businesses that Luna Innovations has created:

Luna Analytics Logo
Luna Analytics, Inc. – In June 1999, Luna Innovations created Luna Analytics to commercialize analytical instruments that improve the assessment of protein interactions. Luna Analytics' devices are being developed to provide advanced disease diagnostics, treatment and drug discovery.

Luna Energy Logo
Luna Energy, LLC – In February 2002, Luna Innovations created Luna Energy to commercialize real-time, state-of-health pipeline monitoring sensors for the oil and gas industry. Luna Energy was acquired in December 2004 by Baker Hughes, a leader in oil field services. Luna continues as a technology partner with Baker Hughes' ProductionQuest Well Monitoring group.

Luna i-Monitoring Logo
Luna i-Monitoring, LLC – In May 2002, Luna Innovations created Luna i-Monitoring to commercialize a suite of highly integrated wireless sensors called iNodes, for cost-effective remote monitoring and Internet accessibility for the oil and gas marketplace. Luna i-Monitoring was acquired by IHS Energy in October 2003 and is now part of Ferguson Beauregard.
