Luna is developing single coat, rapid core, low VOC, non-skid coating for aircraft carrier leveling areas.

Corrosion Prevention Compounds (CPC) and Single Coat/Rapid Cure Coatings
The direct cost of corrosion to the military is approximately $20 billion a year. The U.S. Air Force spends more than $1 billion per year on aircraft repairs and maintenance due to corrosion damage. A substantial portion of these costs are attributable to the corrosion and protection of the primary structural materials used for aircraft and high-performance ground vehicles: high-strength aluminum alloys.
Luna Innovations is working to improve the corrosion resistance of high-strength aluminum alloys by developing cleaning and surface preparation chemistry and processes. Luna is also developing a single-coat/rapid cure, low volatile organic compound (low VOC), non-skid coating system that meets the performance requirements for application in aircraft carrier landing area.
Luna’s single-coat system would require significantly less application and drying time in comparison to standard two-coat systems, saving time and money during large applications as well as repairs. In addition, the system will have improved performance over existing products and is environmentally acceptable.
Luna is also developing a high-performance, environmentally acceptable (chromate-free, low VOC) conformal coating that meets the performance requirements for radar antenna systems. Performance of the coating is being evaluated in accordance with appropriate military test methods and in direct comparison to a qualified product.
