Bacteriophage Identification, Treatment and Decontamination
Bacteriophage (or phage) are naturally occurring viruses that kill bacteria and are found virtually everywhere; in the foods we eat, soil, water, plants and even in our digestive tracts. As bacteria continue to develop drug-resistance at an alarming rate, the science and medical fields are looking for new ways to treat illness-causing bacteria.
Luna Innovations is investigating bacteriophage solutions that will allow for identification, therapeutic treatment and decontamination of bacterial threats. Luna is focusing its research and development efforts in four areas of bacteriophage applications:
- Therapeutics – For treating infections, especially those caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria.
- Delivery - For delivering specific genetic material, like siRNA and anti-microbial peptides to bacteria.
- Biological Detection – Detecting and identifying pathogens and biological warfare agents.
- Decontamination – For making food, packaging and equipment safer.
